Ackerman Institute for the Family is a non-profit institution that was founded in 1960. The institute with headquarters in New York and has a two-fold mission. First is to help troubled families by developing innovative, effective treatment models and second is to train clinicians regarding implementation of these models. It is among the first training institutions in the United States committed to promoting family functioning and family mental health.
The institute has received various international and national awards for the development of innovative models of family therapy, professional training, and community programs for families facing major life challenges. Ackerman institute helps families handle various difficult situations through its treatment sessions and training courses.
Ackerman’s Treatment Center helps all families irrespective of their ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds. Thousands of families are also served by health professionals— trained by Ackerman faculty—who are on staff at social service agencies, schools, hospitals, family courts, and community centers.
Ackerman Institute for the Family is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Ackerman offers family therapy training to mental healthcare professionals. Trainings are also given to social work, psychology, and psychiatric professionals to work effectively with families.
The Institute also supports research projects on issues such as urgent family crises, family transitions from welfare to work, alcoholism and drug abuse, and the impact of major medical illness on family life. This research results in insights about family dynamics that evolve into new approaches to treatment.
Ackerman also houses five thematic centers:
